The luck of the Irish brought sunny skies and 50-degree weather for the ninth annual Stone Harbor Shiver over St. Patrick’s Day weekend. Hundreds of residents and visitors alike decked to the nines in green and gold attended the event in support of Family Promise of Cape May County. The event, hosted by the Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce, has become a tradition for many families.

“This year’s Shiver was truly one for the books,” says Marnie Lengle, the event coordinator. “From our fun and creative King and Queen, Pat and Laurie Bridgeman, to the outpouring of support from our member businesses and community, the Stone Harbor Chamber of Commerce is so grateful. To all the fantastic participants, thank you for bringing your best and providing the crowd with such great skits and laughs. The weather was terrific, and the town was full. We are thrilled and can’t wait for Shiver 2020!”

Best Overall Team Performance: Flocking Seagulls

Shiver weekend kicked off with a Pre-Party Shiver fundraiser at The Reeds at Shelter Haven featuring a buffet dinner, a live auction, and music DJ’d by local favorite Sean Loosh. Last-minute participants were able to register for the Shiver and participants browsed the variety of auction items. Also, the Shiver King showed off his romantic side as he presented his Queen with a diamond ring to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

The annual Kegs & Eggs Party kicked off the day on Saturday at Fred’s Tavern featuring breakfast sandwiches, drink specials and live entertainment. At noon, the Middle Township Marching Band led the parade down 96th Street, featuring the King and Queen escorted on the Sea Isle Ice Shiver Throne. Many spirited participants joined in dancing and clapping along before the costume contest at the Women’s Civic Club.

Nor’easter Nick Pitman, of SJN TV, emceed the costume contest as participants wowed the crowd with their costumes and funky dance moves. Winners took home trophies in several categories including Best Team Name (Peeps Plastic Patrol), Best Team Costume (Maui Time), Best Team Overall Performance (Flocking Seagulls), and Best Individual Shiver (The Mad Hatter in Wonderland).

After a lively contest, plungers hit the 96th Street beach for the chilly dip in the Atlantic Ocean! At the sound of the horn, hundreds ran into the water, and some even went back in for second and third dips. As is tradition, everyone went back to Fred’s Tavern for the Post-Shiver Party while warming up with food and drink specials and entertainment.

Save the date for the 10th annual Stone Harbor Shiver on Saturday, March 14, 2020.
