Rockin' & Rollin' in the Isle

By Jennifer James Davenport

Juicy Band

When the sun goes down in Sea Isle City, the fun is far from over! Everywhere you go on the island there are fun things to see and do. The live-entertainment sector is no exception. From acoustic guitar players to full bands to comedy routines, you can find it all right here. Best part about partying in Sea Isle is you never have to drive. Most places are just a short distance from each other and when you need a ride, take the jitney! We talked to the hottest places in town and beyond to give you the scoop on what is happening.

Entertaining crowds for decades, the Ocean Drive, 3915 Landis Ave., has always been a hot spot. People love its no-shower happy hours and it always has the latest and greatest bands on stage. Every afternoon, there is live acoustic music at the Sandbar & Grill. Relax with your toes in the sand, listen to some great beach tunes and grab a bite to eat in island style. Every Sunday, Secret Service plays the Sunday Jam, followed by In the Biz Sunday with Go Go Gadjet. Tuesday nights the Benderz band is back with DJ Reed Streets and Drummer Tommy G., whose original DJ-Drummer combo is something you don’t want to miss! Thursday nights, Gypsy Wisdom is on stage with Courtney, its new lead singer. In honor of Courtney, girls pay no cover until midnight!

Right on the next block is O’Donnell’s Pour House, 3907 Landis Ave. Here you can find live music every Friday through Sunday night. Josh Liberio, a former contestant on “The Voice,” performs almost every Friday night. On Monday nights, Big Daddy Graham is in the house to host Quizzo. There are always a lot of laughs to be shared on Mondays!

Doc Magrogan’s Oyster House, 8600 Landis Ave., is one of the newer places in town. With drink and food specials as well as live entertainment, you will want to make sure you add this stop to your itinerary. Live music is played Thursday through Saturday nights from 8pm-midnight. Every Thursday, Love & Branca is in the house.  Other musicians who will play over the summer include Shaun LaBoy, Robin Gazzara, Alexis Cunningham and James Howell. Everyone’s favorite, Sean Loosh, is in the house July 13 and Aug. 17, and Les DeRose will be playing on July 28. Plan on dinner and stay for drinks and entertainment. Doc Magrogan’s is a great place to be for a night out.

Whether you want to hang inside or out, you can do both at the Oar House Pub, 318 42nd Place. The name might be new but the entertainment lineup is just as good as it always was. For those who want to hang outside, the Alley Bar has live acoustic entertainment Thursday through Sunday from 5-11pm. Jamie Salvatore plays every Thursday and the rest of the weekend you are treated to the likes of Nick Horn, Andrew Jude, Matt McPherson and Mike Tusay, just to name a few. Head inside on Friday and Saturday nights from 8:30pm-12:30am to hear bands such as Second to None, DC Duo, The GoodFellas and the Bar None Trio.

Another place that has stood the test of time is LaCosta, 4000 Landis Ave. Back in the day, LaCosta was the place to go for entertainment of all kinds. That still holds true today. “The entertainment here is rock ‘n’ roll,” says owner Jimmy Bennett. “We have The Insiders, Split Decision, The Rockets, Jerry Blavat, Don’t Call Me Francis and more. Sunday Funday is the biggest day of the week this year and they are going to be so much fun. It’s a fun crowd, it’s generational for families. And we have a lot of separate days with live entertainment and drink specials. We always like to have a good time here.” Every Sunday, The Insiders play by the Deck Bar from 5-9pm. Blavat, The Geator with the Heater, is inside on Sundays from 4-8pm. Then every Sunday night Don’t Call Me Francis plays from 8-midnight. The party goes on and on! During the week there is live entertainment at the Deck Bar from 5-9 each night. Every Friday and Saturday, there is entertainment inside in the lounge including Split Decision, FunZaLuv, Legacy and more. LaCosta is continuing on as the place to be on Sundays and every day!

If you are thinking of heading south, Avalon is the next town over. The first hot spot you will find is Bobby Dee’s Rock ’N Chair, 2409 Dune Drive. First thing you need to do when you are there is enjoy a nice dinner. Then you can continue the evening at the bar. Sunday through Wednesday at 7pm, you will be entertained by the sounds of Johnny’s Cousin Steve, Rob Lipkin and Ann Oswald. Every Thursday night, Dan Ryan hosts Quizzo, beginning at 8. Throughout the summer, live bands play every weekend. Some of the highlights include: Almost Free on July 3, the full Marquee Band on July 7, and the Juicy Band on Aug. 25. The Juicy Trio is in the house July 6, Aug. 3 and Aug. 17 and the Marquee Trio returns on July 27, Aug. 10 and Aug. 24. Other bands you will find here include: All Tuned Up, The Boatloads, Cornerboys, and Steve and the UBees.

Don't Call Me Francis

Continue heading south and just before you get to Stone Harbor and located right on the beach is the Windrift, 105 80th St. The Windrift has always been popular for its Wing Night (which is still every Tuesday, by the way). You can find various entertainment happening throughout the resort all week long. Every Thursday, The Exceptions play at the Beach Bar at 8pm. Dr. Thunder is there on Wednesdays and Jimmy Doran plays on Thursday nights.

Josh Liberto

Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9:30pm, live bands play at the Blue Wave and at Level 2.  Highlights include Love Seed Mama Jump on July 21 and Aug. 4. The Chatterband is in the house July 20, Aug. 3, Aug. 18 and Sept. 1. Stellar Mojo entertains on July 7, Aug. 11 and Aug. 31. At Level 2, DJ Jules is spinning the tunes every night except Monday and Wednesday. Jimmy Doran is there on Sundays, John Anthony on Mondays and Chris Huff on Tuesdays.

Go Go Gadget

Every night at 6pm in the Signature Lounge, the piano is hopping. Darin McDonald is there Sunday, Tuesday and Friday. Jim Bannach plays Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and Doug Jennings is in the house on Wednesdays. Whether you are looking to relax with a glass of wine or dance the night away with your friends, the Windrift has a little something for everyone.

Once you have experienced the night life at the shore, you will never want to vacation anywhere else. If you want relaxing, we have it. Want to party? No problem. You’d rather sit back and laugh the night away? We can provide that, too. Nothing beats the talent you can see any night of the week. Don’t forget to drink responsibly and take the jitney home!
