The First United Methodist Church of Avalon has long offered light in the darkness with its handsomely illuminated white steeple. Now a new, backlit stained glass window – front and center in the red brick church complex – showcases colorful symbols of salvation and the sea.

When you take the spur off Sea Isle Boulevard just before the bridge into town, you take a step back in time. The old boulevard dead ends at Larsen’s Marina, and nestled across the street, behind a thick crop of native marsh grass, sits an unassuming structure with a lot of history. That is the home of Cape May County’s best new surfboard shaper, Brian Carney.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of its founding organization, the Stephen C. Ludlam Post 331 in Stone Harbor hosted a barbecue and open house for the community on Aug. 10 that was attended by more than 150 people.

Sweet summer, we are so sad to see you go. But at least we have the endless summer weather and events to look forward to! Fall is an amazing time to be at the beach. The weather is usually perfect every day, with bright, sunny skies and cool nights. There is still a ton of beach time to be had, so make sure you clear your schedule when you can! If you are in the mood to go shopping, we found some great items on the island that will help you transition your family and your home into the new season.

Watching a soccer game, have you ever seen a forward making his way downfield with the ball when a defender stops in front of him and starts to riverdance? Me neither. It might be distracting but probably not the most effective defensive strategy.

Have you noticed yourself losing your keys, or forgetting people’s names? Maybe you think you’re getting to a certain age where things seem to disappear a lot? You put the keys, cellphone, glasses, or that favorite sweatshirt somewhere, and hours later, you have no idea where that somewhere is?

Each year there are so many great beach reads that come out just in time for summer, and this year was one of the best! There are so many titles that I wanted to read but haven’t gotten to yet, so I’m hoping to hold on to the endless summer sun for as long as possible. I’d like to finish my “must read” list with my feet in the sand. If you don’t have a list of your own, pick up one of the books here. I was fortunate enough to cross these off my list, and you will be glad that you added them to yours.

As a surfer, my favorite time of the year is the fall. The ocean reaches its warmest temperatures of the year, and the air is still pleasant and dry. In a good season, offshore hurricanes bring swell for weeks on end. There is nothing better than catching a great surf session before heading back to watch the Birds stomp on the Redskins while enjoying a couple of cold ones with friends!

And so it goes, another summer season in the books. We’ve certainly enjoyed our share of sunny, steamy days, and it’s been glorious. But I’ll say what I say every year at this time: September is simply the best. If you have not yet had the chance to enjoy a September beach day, do it this year. It really feels different. The sun warms you rather than bakes you, and the difference is wonderful. Even with the inevitable Indian summer days we are sure to have, the air is still different. September evenings hint at a coming crispness, and the morning haze glistens like at no other time of the year. More

When comedic dramatist Neil Simon passed away last year at 91, the world lost a staggeringly accomplished and prolific writer, arguably the greatest comedy playwright the world has ever seen.
